Dr. Julianne Susanne Sansa-Otim

Biography
Dr. Julianne is a resourceful and productive scientist who takes pride and initiative in going above set objectives. She is a keen researcher who finds work within collaborative partnerships exciting. She is currently the Team leader of the IoT-ra lab (www.iot-ra.net formerly WIMEAICT lab) and a senior Lecturer at Makerere University. Under her leadership, the IoT-ra lab developed a number of innovative solutions including: i) a low-cost automatic weather station; ii) weather information dissemination systems; iii) weather data repositories and weather forecast models. These solutions were not only deployed in Uganda (in partnership with the Uganda National Meteorological Authority) but also in Tanzania, South Sudan, Ghana and Nigeria. Shehas also undertaken multi-disciplinary studies with colleagues from the Health, Agriculture and Electrical Engineering disciplines. Her research lab has won research grants from a number of Development agencies, resulting into capacity building within the Computer Networks department, which she led for seven years. Julianne has published widely in international peer reviewed journals and conferences. She received a PhD in Communications Networks from the University of Groningen, the Netherlands, after studying “Internet High-speed Data Transport Protocols.” Prior to that she had completed a MSc. in Computer Science and a BSc. in Computer Science and Mathematics from Makerere University. Her current research interests are Internet-of-things for developing regions, ICT4Development, Communications Network Protocol Design, internet and telecommunication policies, Quality of Service, Quality of Experience and Systems Security. Julianne is currently the Principal Investigator of a 5-year multi-disciplinary international research project studying technologies for pollinator protection and insect pest control (www.ademnea.net). She also serves as Board Vice Chairperson at Ubuntunet Alliance.

Peter Alvin Mukisa.Is a Communications Lead, working with IoT-ra Laboratory, at the College of Computing and Information Sciences (CoCIS), Makerere University – Kampala Uganda. He develops and implements the communication strategy for the lab. He also doubles as a News Reporter and Pundit with Radio One FM 90; news reporter and editing bytes for on-air consumption and Production.Peter is passionate about public communication, social interactions and community development – a People Developer and team leader of Rafiki Discipleship Hub with over 30 homesteads in Seeta, Mukono Uganda. He facilitates team growth (prayer and fellowship), financial coaching (teaching them the value of work) and physical progress (developing inter-personal relationships and conflict resolution).He holds a bachelor’s degree of Information Technology from Makerere University, Kampala Uganda, a Diploma in Development Studies and several Certificates of Community Development.

Mary Nsabagwa.I am a Ugandan female, computer science Lecturer and researcher at Makerere University. I received a bachelor of science in Computer science from Makerere University, Uganda, received masters of engineering in Computer Science and technology in Hunan University, People’s Republic of China and a PhD in Computer Science from Makerere University. My research interests are in embedded systems and wireless sensor networks, putting emphasis in using IoT to solve community problems. In the past 10 years, I have expanded my network through collaborating with institutions across the world and with individuals from various fields including electrical engineering, meteorology, veterinary medicine, public health and others. I have participated in over 15 IoT projects in areas including weather and climate, pollinator monitoring, assistive technology design and wearable device design for allergen monitoring among others. I have supervised over 50 undergraduate projects leading to innovations, which have competed across the globe. I am currently part of a number of collaborations of several projects mainly in IoT and artificial intelligence.

Biography
Dr. Isaac Mugume holds a PhD in Meteorology from Makerere University. Isaac’s specialization is in Numerical Weather and climate Prediction modeling. He is currently the Director Weather Forecasting Services at the Uganda National Meteorological Authority. Dr. Mugume has over 18 years of teaching and research including carrying out operational Meteorological roles. He is a Board Member of GECA Research Institute and also President of Uganda Meteorological and Allied Professionals Association. Dr. Mugume has to date supervised over 10 graduate students in diverse disciplines including climate change and environmental science.
